By Salmond Reed Architects
This project entailed rearranging internal spaces to achieve modern standards of kitchen and bathroom amenity and improved light quality for our clients, whilst maintaining a sensitive regard for the significant heritage character of their early twentieth century house designed by British-trained architect, Benjamin Chillwell, (later partner in the well-known firm of Chilwell and Trevithick).
The brief also called for reinstatement of character features such as the cupboard under the stairs, improvement to the existing stair balustrade detail, installation of wooden panelling in the foyer. Typical Chilwell details and motifs were successfully integrated to restore the stair and ceilings to more closely resemble the original style.
Externally, the closed-in verandah at the upper level was taken back to its original open form and the distinctive curve of the 1909 entry porch was restored to reinforce the distinctive charm of this character home.
