The project: Strength Group invited Makao to bring our sustainability expertise to the renovation of the old Anglican Church. Located in Nunawading, the building was originally constructed from weatherboard and stone blocks. Strength Group, an architectural and construction company in Melbourne’s West, integrated these features into the new spaces: Refurbished and new congregation halls, outdoor public space and play area, and a new dining hall. A strong focus on design elements that encourage community.

What we did: Makao tailored the assessment and sustainability strategies to the project. All while keeping a close eye on the larger design intent - community and respect for the original form.

First, we looked at water sensitive urban design. Here, we explored ways to improve stormwater quality from the car parks before leaving the site, promote water conservation (internal use), and reduce potable water use from the mains.

Second, we explored how the new design respects the existing form, with minimal demolition of the existing structure. And the goal here was to minimise demolition waste (which typically ends up in landfills).

Another key feature of this design relates to internal amenity and comfort. And here we focused on passive approaches that minimise reliance on mechanical systems. This includes Natural ventilation for fresh air, and efficient building fabric, natural lighting for indoor spaces, and onsite renewable energy.

And finally, Makao put together these and other initiatives into a sustainable management plan. Which then went on to support the development application for town planning. A secondary goal for the project.
