Kobe Construction was selected to complete this project for being nationally recognised as one of the leaders in New Zealand for Mass Timber Project delivery.

Red Stag Investments Ltd and the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) saw this co-investment project as a way to further extend and share learning on mass timber construction approach with the wider industry, and it is now serving as an industry exemplar.

These luxury architecturally designed apartments showcase natural NZ timber throughout the entire project, both structurally and aesthetically. The building has a timber structural frame and floors of cross laminated timber (CLT) panels. Even the lift is also timber framed. It has an outstanding design feature of a curving structural staircase that complements the linear southern façade.

Our team built the apartment building’s structure using components such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), Glulaminated timber and LVL timber portal H frames. Along with Red Stag, key suppliers included Concision, Timberlab and XLam. The coordinated digital build approach involved 3D modelling and building components. With this type of build there was a lot of programming and planning up front, but it is so much similar once you get to site and start installing.

Mass Timber construction is an energy-efficient and sustainable alternative to high-rise and commercial buildings. Wood is a natural, renewable and sustainable material for building, with a lighter carbon footprint than steel or concrete. Not only does it have positive environmental impacts, but it also creates massive efficiencies in construction that are just unprecedented compared to the conventional method of concrete and steel.
