This 1879-built and once-thriving rural School Hall was a complete ruin. It had been abandoned, stripped for building parts and caught on fire. It had no connection to water mains, sewer or power. Undeterred by any obstacles the clients set a plan in motion to bring this school back to its former glory and to then adapt the building as a dwelling, which was to include a juxtaposed and decisively contemporary addition housing two bedrooms and a bathroom. Extensive historical research informed the design brief and great effort has been made to source original materials and restores them to original details, based on the limited photographic and written records.

The schoolhouse allowed for an open plan design of the living spaces with exposed trusses and dramatic ceiling height. Careful internal excavation added a usable basement delicately inserted into retained and restored brick and local rock foundations.

Once earmarked for inclusion to the State Heritage Register and added to the Bathurst Regional Heritage inventory, it will be deserving of any heritage listing when completed.

About the
Professional

At De Moyer Architecture, we work on a variety of different building types, mostly single dwelling residential houses. These are often homes, but also holiday houses, weekenders or investment properties. The house styles vary as much as our clients do, however where suitable we prefer a contemporary, modern aesthetic and an approach that eschews trends and will stand the test of time. Many projects have been alterations, additions, new builds and some adaptations.

A growing number of our projects are situated in heritage conservation areas, which adds another layer of complexity to building controls and design options. Most of our work is within Sydney’s East and we know the surrounding Councils well, but we are always open to interesting projects and have ventured well beyond the city limits.

Our preference is always to provide a full service from Concept Design to the finished Build, but we can provide individual and tailored services as required. The projects featured are a cross-section of past, current and future work we are involved with.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
