Biophilic design enriches state-of-the-art learning hub.
Dandenong South Primary School's mission is to provide students with a positive engaging environment, to spark curiosity and support students independent learning. Through a complete overhaul of a tired existing library, we worked closely with the school to transform the space into a multipurpose Discovery Centre, placing equal importance on technology and a connection to nature through biophilic design.
The Discovery Centre accommodates zones for collaboration, group work and storytelling, a digital lab for online learning, a section for learning and resources, dedicated space to accommodate a full class as well as a quiet reflection nook, whilst a wet area for messy activities can function alternately as a kitchen, art space or science station.
Underpinned by biophilic design principles, the Discovery Centre promotes a connection to the natural world through ample daylight and views out into the libraries sensitively landscaped surroundings. Large windows emphasise the sense of place by framing surrounding trees, whilst green walls feature live plants, aiding in internal air filtration and contributing to a sense of well-being.
