We wanted to maximise the use of our outdoor space in the back yard and create a multi-use area. It was important to us that we maintained a grass lawn area but we wanted a pool area that was safe for young children and comfortable for people watching the swimmers. The planting needed to provide some privacy and using a stone effect tile was important to us to try and make the area more “natural”. It was important that whole area felt connected to the house. The design intent was to create a pool and spa with outdoor seating area for a family who wanted a space to use together. They primarily wanted a new swimming pool and separate spa with a paved area for couches and sunbeds. It was important to retain the existing lawn level on the right side and create a sunken pool and outdoor area on the left which didn’t feel separate from the lower house level. Access into the pool and spa was a consideration as the Clients parents would be frequently using the pool, so handrails were added to allow easy access. A latter design change on site lead to the pool pump room being moved down and integrated into the retaining wall below the pool area.
