BRIEF

Studio Gorman was engaged as the interior designer for the complete reworking of Harbour House, as part of a collaborative team including architect, builder, and landscape designer. The 1980s house had been originally designed by an engineer predominantly to be solid and practical and had not been touched for 30 years.

The home was utilitarian although hints of 80s architectural features hinted at the potential to create a contemporary family home with cool Miami vibes.

INTENTION

Harbour house delivers a home full of character, expressive of the original 80’s architecture with a contemporary take that speaks of its owners.

The material dialogue speaks throughout all levels and reflects the family that live there. With emphasis on durable and natural finishes to make living easy for the clients and their four young children while also paying homage to the client's love of colour, organic materiality and light-filled spaces. Terrazzo floors, marble, brass, and colour combine to create sophisticated spaces with personality.

The spiral staircase that acts as the central spine of the three-story home and round stained glass windows were original elements retained and referenced throughout.

RESULT

A pragmatic approach when designing this home resulted in sophisticated yet playful spaces that don’t compromise on functionality.

Twin side-by-side bathrooms were designed for the four young children of the family. The brief was to create practical yet youthful and memorable bathrooms. A homage to Miami style shines through in these bathrooms with presence.
