The client's brief was to design a small extension to an existing cottage that is "warm, and inviting but with a twist". The design strategy is based around creating a series of thresholds, which adds visual depth to the whole development. This also creates a layering effect and a clear definition between the existing cottage and the new addition.

The central Atrium space acts as a link between the open plan programme, blurring the boundary between the indoor and outdoor space; the external facade of the existing cottage has been preserved but a large opening has been created to integrate the new and existing spaces.

A set of pivot screens to the front facade creates a contemporary first impression, and sense of mystery hinting that there is more behind the threshold; while at the same time connecting the indoor space and garden.
