Hunter Huon Valley

The Hunter Huon cabins balance sophisticated retreat with deep, unmediated connection to the Tasmanian landscape. Three studio cabins are positioned on a dramatic, north-facing slope in the Huon Valley, the architecture frames the landscape as the central element of the guest experience. The core philosophical concept is the 'Forest Couch': a structure defined by intimacy and embrace achieved through the deliberate crafting of space.  A platform for sitting and sleeping is formed with solid back and sides providing essential privacy, shelter, and a sense of being cocooned.  To the north the space opens dramatically via frameless glass.  This acts as a picture frame, integrating the compact interior with the wider landscape and drawing in sunlight, achieving grandeur within an intimate space. Every element is curated to create a specific  sensory experience. Internally, warm Tasmanian Oak lines the space, creating a soft, rich atmosphere.  A strategically placed skylight over the bed facilitates a profound celestial connection for unobstructed stargazing. The bath is positioned front and centre, before expansive views and beside the wood-burning stove, fostering a sense of immersion in nature, and an atmosphere of warmth, and intimacy. A key innovation is the deck, projected off to the side like a jetty to maintain direct views down slope into the bush from within and, upon stepping outside, allows guests to feel in the trees. The result is a restorative retreat where the architecture acts as both a protective embrace and a precise lens through which to observe the natural world.
