The extensive alterations and additions to this Woollahra home comprise our fourth project for this family. They had purchased the property with an approved development application, and asked us to redesign the building within the approved envelope so as to expedite the project.
We reinstated the street address of the original cottage, constructed in the 1860’s, and re-established the front entry door. A clear delineation was then established between the old and the new – by way of a change in ridge height, a change in materiality, and a change in scale for the garage addition. Beyond the front rooms of the cottage, the dwelling was completely rebuilt. This third volume, hidden from street view, is clearly articulated through form and the use of white washed handmade bricks.
Bedrooms are located on the street level while the lower ground level contains the living, kitchen and dining rooms. These rooms open to both the central courtyard, and the rear garden and pool. Connectivity through the building; linking the two outdoor areas is key to success of the design. This open flexible layout allows for expansion and contraction; allowing a couple to live in the house comfortably, while also easily accommodating children and grandchildren.

Established in 1999, Sam Crawford Architects (SCA) is a design driven architectural practice based in Sydney, Australia. PeopleOur team is led by Practice Principal and Design Director, Sam Crawford. Alongside the recognition for his built work Sam is highly regarded within the architectural profession. He has led humanitarian architectural projects, conducted gallery based and built research projects, been invited to serve as head-juror for the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Awards, and was a joint creative-director of the 2014 Australian Institute of Architects National Conference. Sam is co-chair of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Medium Practice Forum, and a member of the Government Architect NSW State Design Review Panel.
With a practice of our size, clients can be assured that Sam is intimately involved in each project. We work in an open-plan studio environment in collaborative teams to ensure the smooth delivery of projects across all scales. Our team is comprised of highly skilled professionals, graduates and students.
