Land development at the iconic Kauri Cliffs resort for Waiau Bay Farming Ltd.

Kauri Cliffs is one of New Zealand's most celebrated golf and lodge destinations, part of the Robertson Lodges collection near Matauri Bay. When the owners, through their project management firm Frequency, needed a Northland engineering partner to help shape the long-term future of this large land holding, they came to Haigh Workman.

Our brief covered two distinct pieces of work.

The first was an infrastructure audit to inform and underpin the Kauri Cliffs master plan. We assessed all existing and potential future infrastructure across the site, covering drinking water, wastewater, stormwater and physical site access. One of the most demanding aspects was consolidating information from dozens of separate sources, some formal, some informal, and some based on work carried out decades earlier, into a single coherent set of reference drawings.

The result was something the owners hadn't had before: a comprehensive, unified picture of what existed on site, what was possible in terms of land use, and what investment would be required to realise their vision. We also developed a construction and funding stage-plan, so financing could be drawn down and deployed as efficiently as possible. In short, we took a theoretical vision and gave it the engineering foundation to become a workable, fully-costed plan.

The second element was engineering delivery for the initial stages of the master plan, focused on new on-site accommodation to strengthen the resilience of the operation. This included geotechnical investigation, earthworks, and Three Waters design covering drinking water, wastewater and stormwater management.

Kauri Cliffs is a significant piece of Northland's tourism infrastructure, and contributing to its long-term development, and by extension the region's economic future, is exactly the kind of work we're here to do.
