Social housing in Moerewa for Canam Construction and Ngāti Hine Health Trust

Marohapa Housing Development

Moerewa has waited a long time for investment in social housing. When Canam Construction approached us to support this 35-unit development for Ngāti Hine Health Trust, we didn't hesitate. It's exactly the kind of project that sits at the heart of why we do what we do.

Haigh Workman had two distinct roles on this project.

The first was structural design. The development comprises 35 residential units and an associated wellness centre, spanning eight different designs, including double-storey units ranging from two to four bedrooms. It was a varied and technically interesting brief.

The second was project management, beginning with early-stage collaboration with the project architect to ensure Canam was getting the best possible value from every design and engineering decision. On a social housing project, value engineering isn't a nice-to-have. Choices like whether to use glulam timber instead of steel can determine whether a project stacks up financially at all. That discipline carried through to construction management once building got underway.

The biggest challenge was time. The deadline was tight and there was no flexibility in it. The team delivered, on time and on budget, which we're proud of.

Projects like this one remind us why local matters. A local firm understands the context, cares about the outcome, and is invested in getting it right. We hope to see many more social housing projects like this one across Northland as investment in the region continues to grow.
