‘Give us something different and definitely not country!’ This is what my clients announced when I asked what they had in mind for their new kitchen and scullery, part of the extensive renovation of their newly purchased 90’s-built home surrounded by lush farmland. Walls were coming out, and the once separate lounge, dining room and kitchen was to become one large, contemporary space perfect for a family with two growing children.
The kitchen needed to be a functional family space, with the large central island acting as homework station, informal dining space and the perfect place to show off one’s culinary skills. The decision was made early in the design process to situate the hobs on the island bench, using the ‘deconstructed’ Pitt gas burners. Fitted directly into the 6mm thick plate steel bench, these are a show stopping feature. There is an easy flow from the cook top to the oven ‘wall’, creating a dream chef’s kitchen. The sink is situated along the back wall, giving the ‘dish washer’ a view of the farmland outside.
The scullery is a functional storage space, housing the fridge / freezer and providing plenty of bench space for small appliances.
The kitchen is clad in back painted glass to bring the outside in by reflecting the views, while also adding life and lightness to the space. The gravity defying solid timber breakfast bar and oven wall frame are fabricated from specially selected swamp Rimu, preferred for its rich colouring and deep, dark grain
