This 1980s country home was reimagined with a contemporary kitchen designed to support modern family living and large-scale entertaining. Working alongside Jenny Burrough Design, the outdated kitchen and separate pantry were transformed into a highly functional space featuring dual workstations and a dedicated scullery.
The Opportunity: The clients purchased a large 1980’s country residence and engaged Jenny Burrough Design (JBD) to transform the home to suit their modern lifestyle. A key focus was redesigning the outdated and dysfunctional kitchen and separate pantry into a contemporary, functional space. The kitchen needed to accommodate entertaining for up to twenty guests and include two workstations or a separate scullery to allow multiple cooks to work simultaneously. Two sink areas with separate dishwashers were required, with one sink dedicated to an existing coffee machine. Frequently used small appliances such as a breadmaker, food processor, and Kenwood mixer needed to be stored conveniently for easy access, while the existing oven, still in good order, was to be reused. A wide benchtop with seating for grandchildren and serving was essential, along with a wine rack to support the cook and the enjoyment of wine. The owners also required practical storage for their large collection of cookbooks. To achieve a warm yet contemporary look that would withstand the demands of a busy kitchen, Kwila natural timber veneer in a flat panel style was selected for the cabinetry.
The Result: The completed transformation delivered a contemporary kitchen that perfectly suits the clients’ lifestyle while enhancing the character of the home. The dual workstations and scullery layout allow multiple cooks to work efficiently, and the two sink areas, including a dedicated coffee station, streamline daily routines. The wide benchtop with integrated seating creates a welcoming space for family gatherings and entertaining, while the thoughtfully designed storage solutions keep small appliances and cookbooks both accessible and neatly organized. The wine rack is seamlessly incorporated, balancing functionality with elegance, and the reuse of the original oven maintains a connection to the home’s history. With the warm, modern aesthetic of the Kwila timber cabinetry, the kitchen now functions beautifully for both everyday living and large-scale entertaining, creating a refined and practical heart of the home.
