By Hoogerbrug Architects
Hoogerbrug Architects were engaged to design a coastal retreat on the Mahia Peninsula, right on the edge of the coast. The brief called for a home that was connected to its surrounding environment without causing undue harm. The site is located on the edge of a hillside with Pohutakawa trees stabilising the ground and deep piles were used here to anchor the building. Locating this building was navigated by axially placing it to welcome the views out ocross the coast whilst being set back into the tree line. A focus on preservation of the native bush was held as a core belief when designing for the area. Encouragement and support for the site’s environment was introduced through walking tracks and further planting.
