A Wellington Icon, Reimagined
What does it take to make a 30-year-old commercial tower feel alive?
The Majestic Centre has held its place on Wellington's skyline for decades. But inside, the experience hadn't kept pace with the presence. Until now.
Working alongside Unispace, we introduced more than 40 individual gardens into the central atrium - layering the space with native New Zealand species selected not just for how they look, but for how they perform.
Plants chosen to read the light conditions of a deep interior atrium, to handle the airflow patterns of a multi-storey commercial lobby, and to thrive there long-term rather than merely survive the first season.
The result is a space that feels fundamentally different to walk through. Upgraded end-of-trip facilities, a new cafe, and a refreshed lobby now sit within an environment that breathes - where planting softens built form and reconnects tenants with something of Aotearoa's landscape, even twenty floors above the street.
This is what becomes possible when established commercial assets are approached with fresh eyes - when ecology informs the design, and greenery is treated as infrastructure rather than finish.
Developed in collaboration with Unispace, Charter Hall, Cloud Grow and the wider project team.
