MANGAWHAI DUNE HOUSE – AS SEEN ON TV
As seen on TV! This beautiful red brick home nestles itself so gently into the dunes of Tern Point, Mangawhai. The building produces grace from its solidity in the ever-changing dunes, utilising a thin Roman profile in a smooth red custom-made brick from Canterbury Clay Bricks, both inside and out.
Nick Dunning from Oto Group Architecture (also the client's son) designed some curved walls, bringing playfulness and intrigue to the home. The warmth of the red brick marries so well with the home's natural timber and handmade wooden elements in every light from sunrise to sunset.
This building plan has essentially an L shape in two pods, one of which is nearly entirely glass, creating a great deal of light and stunning, ever-changing views. But the brick pod also lets the client retreat into cave-like, restful areas of respite that everyone needs in their home.
DC Bricklayers have laid the Fendalton Roman (290x50x70) in a 3/4 stretcher instead of the standard 1/2 stretcher bond, elongating the brick even more, which then sits perfectly around the curves.
Nick’s little touches play significant parts in this home. Negative detailing the drainpipes into the bricks, creating a streamlined front wall, for example. Having internal walls thicker to accommodate the length of the Roman brick gave the perception of dense, solid walls, keeping the inhabitants safe from the turbulent, ever-changing dunes outside.

Canterbury Clay Bricks is a family run business, supplying clay bricks nationally, for commercial and residential builds, since its inception over 50 years ago. We are the only manufacturer of kiln fired clay bricks in the South Island.
We offer you an impressive collection using rich Canterbury clays, from which we have created a host of enduring finishes and colours that will add style and value to your new home or project.
Canterbury Clay Bricks manufacturing plant is located close to its clay supplies within the surronding hills of Darfield. A number of recycled products are used in the manufacture of the bricks including re-constituted brick and recycled glass. The kilns at the plant run on up to 95% of re-claimed fuels and oil further reducing any impact of manufacturing. We supply nationwide to both residential and commercial projects, new builds and renovations.
Bricks are a blend of clays and water. The bricks are then formed, dried and kilned to produce a strong and durable end product. They are then hand blended and graded by staff to give a consistent finish.
