Nestled close to the city of Melbourne and just a stone’s throw from the Chadstone Shopping Centre is the MGallery by Sofitel. This 5 star hotel will be the first Green Star hotel in Australia once fully operational in 2020.
"I find when I’m looking for fabrics that need to be robust, as with a hotel, the result can appear quite generic. We found the Zepel range to be far from the case, unique and also at a price point that allowed us to use it liberally, rather than just keeping it for restricted areas." - James Campbell, Portfolio Director of DWP in Australasia
Designed by architects, DWP the hotel combines exclusivity and comfort that transports guests into a world of glamour and opulence. The hotel’s operator Accor Hotels, together with the owners of Chadstone Shopping Centre, dubbed ‘The Fashion Capital’, were keen to create an ‘experience’ for guests taking inspiration from vintage 1920s and the legendary fashion designers from the 20th century.
Heading up the interior fit-out, designer Bates Smart was briefed with creating a contemporary interior fusing together ‘threads’ from key moments in the 20th century. With an overarching theme of the ‘journey of fashion’ the opulent and glamourous interiors required luxurious yet eco-friendly fabrics that would reach the status of a Green Star building.
To achieve a Green Star rating the designers were tasked with not only sourcing exquisite fabrics but those that met all the necessary building standards including the standards for Green Star rating.
Zepel Fabrics were specified for furniture and drapery for their large range of textures, including luxurious velvets including Zepel’s FibreGuard range. FibreGuard is unique in what it delivers. Stain resistant, durable, easy to clean and green-conscious - attributes that make an ideal solution for a Green Star hotel.
“I find when I’m looking for fabrics that need to be robust, as with a hotel, the result can appear quite generic,” says architect James Campbell, Portfolio Director of DWP in Australasia. “We found the Zepel range to be far from the case, unique and also at a price point that allowed us to use it liberally, rather than just keeping it for restricted areas,” he says. Zepel’s properties such as eco friendliness and having a minimum 10-year life span were also appealing to the design team.
The French inspired Presidential Suite includes a range of velvets in particular Russian velvets and the ‘Cuzco’ (12111) for the sofa in the penthouse suite. ‘Flow’ drapery for the penthouse curtains, in an onyx hue, added a level of sophistication to the design.
