By Second Nature
The design of this small, elegant, urban courtyard designed by Andy Hamilton, demonstrates a rare sophistication and is in perfect harmony with the architecture. Informally arranged to enhance the sense of space, it delights with its seasonality, edible fruits, leaves and herbs. It is both a space in which humans relax and a haven for fauna.
The client’s interest in sustainability comes through on a subtle but clever level. The design intentionally reduces the garden’s ‘footprint’, as evidenced by the high levels of permeability, careful material selection and a desire to support pollinator species. Plants have also been selected with an eye to the unpredictable nature of the Auckland climate. The choice of hard materials is restrained, with an emphasis on permeability, a much-needed characteristic in dense urban settings.
The overall result is a low key, subtle, yet complex series of delightful spaces. The courtyard demonstrates how even a small space can be designed to bring people and nature together in a truly delightful way.
