"The success of these interiors lies in the way existing pieces are gently drawn together within the overall scheme. Every room feels warm and inviting – just like the people who live here. We believe it’s not necessary to replace every item. In some instances, we re-covered existing pieces that were comfortable and had good scale. In others, we made treasured heirlooms the hero." A broad brief to refresh the interiors of this tranquil, mountain retreat was met with an earthy palette of natural tones inspired by the spectacular landscape. We were tasked to pull together the existing art and furniture and create a comfortable, cohesive interior. The interiors were softened with sympathetic new pieces – furniture, soft furnishings, wallpaper, paint and lighting throughout the house. The result is testament to the transformative power of interior decorating. Photography by Maree Homer

“I enjoyed a wonderful collaboration with Kate Nixon, reimagining the interior of our Federation-style home. Kate has a lovely, classical design sensibility and I loved that she is the elegant representative for the Italian fabric house Busatti, set in the town of Anghiari, Tuscany. She intuitively understands creating a sense of understated luxury and glamour in interiors and has designed beautiful living spaces for our home in a subtle palette which brings in touches of vivid orange. She is aware of my interest in fashion and travel that is part of my background as a former senior editor for Vogue Living and Vogue Entertaining + Travel, which continues on with our family travels. Hence, the informal living area with its bookshelves stacked with books and magazines, creamy white linen Busatti curtains which open to reveal the garden, kitchen adjoining detailed in white carrara marble, and bathroom lined with white mosaic tiles which reference favourite places such as Italy, France and Africa.”
