We are proud to announce Kitchen Architecture's wins at the latest NKBA Excellence in Design awards 2018.  In addition to the esteemed "Supreme Kitchen Design Runner-Up" we were also honoured to receive Runner-Up in both Auckland Chapter Recognition and CDS Best Kitchen Design awards. They needed organisation, a baking area, generous benches, flow to both outdoor areas and a welcoming space for family connection.  Finding us late in their build programme, electrical holes already peppered the feature block wall.
Keen to celebrate their new home’s industrial and natural materiality, our clients wanted a contemporary kitchen, designed with rawness & ‘honesty’. A concrete block wall was to feature in the kitchen yet be practical
Zones have been created throughout the kitchen to keep the flow and ergonomics at its prime, while the front of the island conveniently houses drinks and homework resources.
Pocket doors to the dedicated Baking Pantry keep spaces flowing and accessible. Practical storage systems with specific functionalities fill the drawers.
A custom stainless-steel ventilation cabinet is likewise separated from the warm teak to celebrate the block’s raw beauty. To protect the concrete surface long-term, I conceived a retractable 6mm-thin steel sheet splashback. 
The generous island features a rugged granite bench, chosen for its tactile feel and natural character.  It provides an abundance of set-down space for dishes without interrupting the workflow of the home-chef’s areas,.

Continuing the industrial patina, a hand-crafted, blackened steel frame creates a bold foundation to the island’s structure. Exposed welds express the raw ‘honesty’ of its fabrication, however, the thick welds conflicted with square edges of teak panels.
