This project was a major renovation of a 1970s home on the lower slopes of Huntsbury. While undertaking earthquake repairs our clients also wished to take the chance to add some space and update the appearance and performance of the home, which had remained in mostly original condition.

The house has been entirely reclad using new white brick and a Colorsteel roof to give it a more contemporary look. Thermally-broken aluminium joinery, new insulation and a ducted heat pump system ensures that the home is comfortable and energy-efficient. Cedar weatherboards have been used on the gable ends and balcony balustrades.

Outdoor living was major problem with the original house – it had only a small patio beside the entrance, and the house sat so far above the garden below that is was seldom used. We solved this by introducing a series of terraced decks and lawns that provide easily-accessed areas for small and large gatherings, and also serve to break up the step down to the lawn into smaller sections.

A favourite space is the covered dining area complete with an outdoor kitchen, built-in seating and heating. There is also a smaller balcony that opens directly off the living room and provides a sitting area sheltered from the easterly breeze and with a solid balustrade that offers privacy from the road below.
