A modern renovation of a 1960s beach home, Tuawera Retreat offers tranquility and stunning views of Sumner Beach, blending original charm with contemporary design for a unique coastal sanctuary.

There’s no place like this for pure tranquility, where you can lose yourself in the peacefulness, gazing out at the ever-changing sea. The salt-laden breeze wafts through the doors, bringing with it the distant sounds of laughter and play from Sumner Beach far below. Step onto the deck—warm, intimate, and enveloped by lush greenery, it’s the perfect sanctuary to unwind and let go.

An understated renovation of a 1960s beach home overlooking Sumner Beach. Wherever possible we retained original building elements, even if they showed signs of age. Where replacement was necessary, we chose new materials that were appropriate to the style of the bach.

“The end result is a unique beach property. The team at Chaplin Crooks realised our vision of a new, but not new, 1960s beach bach. With so many character properties lost in the Christchurch quake, it was fantastic to see this bach reinstated and good to go for another 60 years.” - Mark and Teresa

“Stephen managed the tender process and building project with meticulous attention to detail and excellent communication throughout. As ‘first-timers’ to building and renovation we absolutely appreciated Stephen’s wise advice and ability to identify and address issues as needed. He certainly saved us a great deal of stress and prevented costly mistakes – without a doubt, value for money! We are delighted with the end result – our vision has become reality.”
