Award-Winning Dart: Sustainable Retreat with Ocean Views in Mangawhai, New Zealand
Meticulously crafted by Studio John Irving Architects, this holiday retreat at Bream Tail Farm, near Mangawhai, embodies a simple yet ingenious concept known as the Dart. Its strategic north-facing orientation offers breathtaking ocean views to the east and picturesque farmland vistas to the west. Every detail of this exceptional project showcases the exceptional quality of JSC materials, from the elegant Western Red Cedar accents both inside and out, to the robust Hardwood Vitex decking, and the impeccable solid American White Oak flooring that completes the picture.
This remarkable home proudly earned its place as a finalist in HOME magazine's prestigious House of the Year 2020 awards.
Inside, the use of Western Red Cedar for both interior paneling and the rich American White Oak flooring creates a sense of expansive openness, accentuated by soaring ceilings in the spacious open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas. The continuity of cedar paneling from the exterior is elegantly carried inside, gracing the captivating entertainer’s space, gallery, hallway, and master bedroom.
Externally, the Dart boasts a vertical shiplap weatherboard façade, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. From its eastern vantage point, the home captures enchanting views of Hen and Chicken Islands, Sail Rock, as well as both Great and Little Barrier Islands. To the west, it overlooks the pristine native bush near the Brynderwyn Hills, offering a truly immersive experience with nature.
