By Rogan Nash Architects
We worked with the heritage features of this bungalow and introduced traditional character so the old and new feel at ease. It was about enhancing what was there by taking existing elements and seeing how we could make them work to create a sense of harmony.
The updated home feels quite grand: with a new second story, open plan living, kitchen, dining room and two more bedrooms and bathroom. Now the spaces have been rationalised, there is logic to their flow. Lofty ceilings throughout the new area are in keeping with the original bungalow which also has high studs. The formal character of the existing house is further enriched with detailing in the skirting, panelling in the hallway, the design of the windows and cabinetry, right down to the door handles. A winter lounge was created in hues of blue which not only captures the afternoon sunlight but cleverly incorporates existing traditional features into the cabinetry. It has become a cosy retreat from the open plan space, a room for time alone, away from the busy family and entertaining area.
With its majestic proportions and elegant detailing, new life has been gently brought back to this gracious old lady, creating a very comfortable family retreat from city life.
