Located in Grey Lynn, Auckland, Same Same but Different is a carefully considered renovation and extension of a heritage bungalow, designed to celebrate the home's original character while creating a contemporary family home for modern living. Rather than replacing what was already there, the design builds upon the qualities that made the original bungalow special. The street-facing façade has been carefully restored, preserving its heritage detailing and neighbourhood presence, while a contemporary rear addition introduces generous open-plan living spaces that connect effortlessly to the garden. At the heart of the home is a light-filled kitchen, dining and living area designed for everyday family life and entertaining. Large sliding doors dissolve the boundary between inside and out, allowing the living spaces to extend onto outdoor terraces and landscaped gardens. Bespoke joinery, carefully selected natural materials and finely crafted detailing create interiors that feel warm, timeless and welcoming. The renovation balances openness with intimacy, creating spaces that encourage gathering while still providing quieter places to retreat. Existing architectural features have been respectfully retained and complemented by contemporary interventions that are intentionally restrained, allowing the heritage and new architecture to sit comfortably together. Throughout the project, craftsmanship and materiality play a central role. Timber, natural stone and custom joinery introduce warmth and texture, while generous glazing draws daylight deep into the home and frames views of the surrounding landscape. Same Same but Different demonstrates how a heritage bungalow can be thoughtfully reimagined for contemporary life. The result is a home that honours its past while embracing the needs of modern family living, creating a timeless renovation that feels both familiar and entirely new.
