Built on the edge of the existing café strip and its adjacent streets of heritage houses, M/28 is a three-storey mixed-use development on South Fremantle’s vibrant South Terrace. With a mix of six ground floor commercial tenancies and 20 one and two-bedroom apartments over, the building is an example of sensitive medium-density infill development that is contextual in its materials, forms and massing.
Built around a landscaped common courtyard, the architecture employs a limited palette of materials and simple forms to create a diverse mix of apartments, each accessed from wide external walkways. Achieving a 4 Greenstar rating, every apartment is cross-ventilated, with operable batten screens providing protection from both the summer sun and the ‘Fremantle Doctor’ wind.
M/28 stands comfortably in its surroundings, embodying and contributing to the character of South Fremantle and the vibrancy of South Terrace.
Architecture & the human spirit
After ten years as David Barr Architects, today our team is known simply and collectively as Cast. Our culture is open, diverse and inclusive. We work together on architecturally designed homes defined by purpose and character.
Cast Studio designs buildings that shape lives for the better. We do this by celebrating the collective act of architecture. Cast is a catalyst for change, working in active partnership with clients, collaborators and communities.
We value a multitude of perspectives because we recognize that the spaces, we create serve a multitude of people. A shared architecture, for a common good.
Cast Studio is located in Fremantle, WA.
