Tiu (House Sparrow) House is the contemporisation of the traditional cottage form. The clients' much loved, old family owned kiwi holiday house was the initial design driver, pulled apart and separated into defining forms, The Lean-to, The Gable and The Porch. These three elements take on a programmatic function within the home. 

The Lean-to becomes the private accommodation wing; The Gable the public interface zone; and The Porch the separate studio and amenity. These elements are then linked, across separate construction stages, finally forming one cohesive family home.

‍The home bucks the trend of the Central Otago architectural equivalent of, “short back and sides”, or “a flat white”. The generic palette of black and cedar is cast away for tones that are much more conducive to the surrounding context and a true reflection of the clients love of the outdoors.
