Nestled into the site, protected from the south, sits a new home which subtly draws your interest with lines and angles. As you walk through the front door the house opens up to rural views and warm sunshine. The Clients had been planning to build for some time, and as a builder, wanted to ensure that the house was something unique, showcasing great design and craftsmanship. The Abbotsford subdivision has lots of high and heavy hipped roofs, so a hip roof is also used here, but one so flat it sits lightly on the house and making it less imposing. For cladding the natural materials cedar and Oamaru stone were chosen. These were worked into bays allowing the materials interact with each other. The single level dwelling is easy care with large decks, and is made of three wings - garage, living and bedroom, protecting the outdoor area. The open plan living area has different ceiling heights to help define the spaces within it. Low-E argon thermally broken glazing is used, and the extensive sun falls onto a significant thermal mass, including tiling around the edge of the carpeted living space.

The site has an unexpected benefit for this train enthusiast client – a railway line just below the site. The master bedroom has a deck which overlooks the line, but is secluded from nearby houses by clever placement on the site, the use of screens and landscaping.

DWELLING’S PHILOSOPHY

Designing is part of the process of creating, and it should be a process that is enjoyed by all – from the client to the sub-contractor. It is a chance to dream and the end result should be something that everyone is proud of.

Design needs to be sustainable, individual & tailored for the site. Thought needs to be given to materials, sun, views, prevailing wind, budget and how the client lives in order to make the final outcome relevant.

Design needs to be thorough with attention paid to detail. This is the art of communicating through drawings. Time and attention paid at the start, pays dividends during the build. Design decisions need to be made early. It is strange but true that to make something look simple and elegant takes more time, thought and detail than making a cluttered form.

Creating takes a team. For a build to be a successful, it takes teamwork from the client, the designer, consultants, the contractor and sub-contractors working towards a common goal. We are in this together and together we can come up with creative solutions. The job does not end when the design is complete but the designer needs to be involved until the end.

That is Dwelling’s goal – Creative, sustainable and thoughtful design, brought to life by a team that enjoys the process.
