Introducing the University of Auckland Building 201:

Setting new benchmarks for low carbon design and sustainability

EllisCo is proud to be part of the remarkable University of Auckland Building 201 project, a prestigious 'adaptive reuse' venture that is poised to redefine the standards of low carbon design and sustainability. Due to open in 2024, this 50-year-old structure has been meticulously transformed into a beacon of innovation and environmental consciousness.

The University of Auckland's commitment to achieving excellence is evident in the building's remarkable achievements. It has been awarded an astounding 93 points by the New Zealand Green Building Council, attaining a 6 Green Star Design rating. This prestigious accolade places the University's Social Sciences Building 201 in the 'world leadership' category, setting a resolute example for others to follow.

Creating a sustainable ecosystem for education and well-being

The University of Auckland Director of Property Services, Simon Neale, has emphasized the institution's unwavering dedication to sustainability. The B201 redevelopment perfectly aligns with the University's vision of developing innovative and sustainable campuses that foster student learning, well-being, and a world-class research-intensive environment.

The design of Building 201 seamlessly blends the refurbishment of an existing structure with a striking new timber atrium, which serves as the home for the Faculty of Education and Social Work, and the Faculty of Arts. By replacing the existing concrete cladding with a lightweight system, the building achieves both a reduction in carbon footprint and an increase in floor area. Additionally, the installation of a lightweight curtain wall ensures the building's earthquake-proof resilience for the next half-century.
