The proposal for this historic property in Vaucluse seeks to blend the original, well maintained sandstone property with a new extension that will maximise the use of the upper floors that overlook Watsons Bay. The property once served as the stonemason's house where the remains of his crafty work are seen throughout the house. Original detailing on the lower floors is maintained to keep in character of the property.
The reconstruction of the first floor and creation of an open plan, modern yet subtle addition creates a gentle division between the old and the new. The chamfered copper roof and black battens contrast but not compete with the existing sandstone. The lightweight appearance of the first floor allows for the new extension to sit gently on its sandstone plinth. Internally, the first floor frames the views of Watson Bay significantly improving the quality of the living space and creating unforgettable views.
