Waikanae Studio Apartment
Our client's vision for a studio apartment in the rear yard of their coastal bach came to life with Essence Architectural Design. They desired a space that would be perfect for family and friends to stay, prioritizing a high cathedral ceiling and plenty of natural light. With limited space, a small kitchenette was essential. Careful consideration was given to not shade the neighbours, as the studio was to be placed on the eastern boundary. Using 3D modelling, we ensured the design met all requirements without encroaching on neighbouring properties.
During the design process, we collaborated closely with the client to create a visually striking space. Exposed trusses and white grooved ceilings were initially considered but were later adjusted to optimize the room's width. The final design featured large bi-folding doors that opened out to a beautifully landscaped courtyard with a fireplace. Inside, birch plywood was used for the bathroom and kitchenette, maintaining a simple yet elegant palette. The completed studio boasts a seamless transition to the outdoor deck, offering ample space for entertaining and showcasing feature joinery for the kitchenette and entertainment area. With a centred bed on the ridge beam, the studio maximizes space efficiency with clever storage solutions and thoughtful design elements.
