In October last year, The Council of the European Union gave its final approval to the common charger directive. This means that in 2024, a USB-C port will become mandatory in the European Union for a whole range of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and headphones.
17,000 kms away in New Zealand, we can celebrate this directive as a win. The transition to universal Type-C charging will soon reach our shores, and along with it the convenience of one-size-fits-all chargers, faster charging technology and a significant reduction in our electronic waste.
Increased compatibility and convenience: Adopting a universal Type-C standard ensures compatibility and simplifies charging across different devices allowing you to easily connect and power them without the need for additional adapters or cable.
Faster charging speeds: Type-C cables support higher power delivery, enabling faster charging times compared to older USB standards. This is particularly beneficial for larger devices like laptops and tablets, which require more power to charge quickly.
Reduced electronic waste: With a reduction in the need for different charging cables and adapters, our electronic waste will be significantly reduced. This move toward a standardised charging solution is more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Legrand has been the first global manufacturer to discontinue its dual Type-A charging mechanisms in favour of Type-C and dual Type C solutions. Our wiring device ranges; Excel Life (white, black, and urban grey), Arteor (white and magnesium), Excel and Linea, will all be moving away from Type-A capability.
Along with the discontinuation of Type-A products, Legrand’s charging solutions are changing from 4.8AMP to 3AMP – with no bulky power supply dongle, these fittings deliver ease-of-installation to standard flush boxes, along with a reduction in price. 3AMP offers the ability to charge two smart phones simultaneously.
When an extra powerful charging solution is required, Legrand has retained its 60W (external power supply) single Type-C mechanism. All Legrand’s charging solutions are 5V dc voltage, have overheating protection, surge protection, overload protection of 3.1A, and an increased standby power of <75mW.
