What is a Clean Air Wood Fireplace?

A clean air wood fireplace is a wood-burning appliance that has been independently tested to meet New Zealand's strict emission and efficiency requirements.

Modern clean air fireplaces are designed to burn wood more completely, producing more heat while using less fuel.

Benefits include:

Higher heating efficiency
Lower smoke emissions
Reduced firewood consumption
Cleaner glass with advanced airwash systems
Longer burn times
Better heat output
Reduced environmental impact

These fireplaces not only create a beautiful focal point but also provide efficient, reliable heating for New Zealand homes.

Why Clean Air Wood Fires Matter in New Zealand

Many regions throughout New Zealand have regulations governing wood burner emissions to improve winter air quality.

When selecting a fireplace, it's important to consider:

Local council emission requirements
Home insulation levels
Room size
Heat output
Flue design
Building Code compliance
AS/NZS 2918 installation requirements

Choosing the correct fireplace early in the design process helps avoid costly changes during construction.

Types of Clean Air Wood Fireplaces

Inbuilt Wood Fireplaces

Inbuilt fireplaces are one of the most popular choices for contemporary homes.

Installed within the wall, they create a sleek architectural appearance and work beautifully with:

Dekton and porcelain surrounds
Venetian plaster finishes
Floating hearths
Minimalist interiors

They are ideal for:

New homes
Major renovations
Open-plan living
Feature walls

Freestanding Wood Fires

Freestanding wood fireplaces remain a favourite throughout New Zealand.

They offer:

Excellent radiant heat
Outstanding convection heating
Lower installation costs
Traditional and contemporary styling
Reliable whole-home heating

Perfect for family homes, lifestyle properties and rural locations.

Double-Sided Wood Fireplaces

Double-sided fireplaces provide warmth and ambience to two adjoining spaces while creating a striking architectural feature.

They are ideal for:

Open-plan homes
Living and dining rooms
Lounge and outdoor entertaining areas
Luxury architectural projects

Retrofitting a Clean Air Wood Fireplace into an Existing Chimney

One of the most common renovation projects is replacing an older open fireplace, gas fireplace or outdated wood burner with a modern clean air wood fireplace.

Many existing masonry chimneys can be reused, reducing demolition costs while dramatically improving heating performance and efficiency.

Retrofitting an existing fireplace can provide:

Improved heating performance
Lower firewood consumption
Cleaner burning
Modern aesthetics
Increased property value

Every retrofit project should be assessed individually to determine the best fireplace, flue system and any structural modifications required.
