Visually, minimalism offers an incredibly sleek aesthetic, but it comes with challenges when it comes to window and door systems. Large spans of glass need a lot of strength, and structural integrity for oversized joinery requires a specialised approach.
To understand how these types of issues are resolved in contemporary minimalist architecture, we spoke to Urbane Design Studio’s Trudi McGauley, who shares the trends and technology for minimalist window and door solutions.
One of the benefits of minimalist window and door systems is the abundance of natural light they bring into a space. With slim frames and expansive glass panels, these designs allow sunlight to flood interiors, creating bright, inviting environments. But when it comes to design, oversized sliding and pivot doors and guillotine windows are some of the most challenging. To maintain structural strength and good insulation with minimal framing Urbane Design Studio uses complex engineering techniques, advanced glazing technologies and high-strength aluminum for stability.
“We can balance slim profiles with adequate insulation by incorporating thermal breaks in aluminum frames and high-performance glazing options to enhance insulation.”
The structural integrity of large doors and windows is different for every project and the design solution is based on the specific requirements of the building, shares McGauley.
“Most times we can overcome any issues with automation, advanced glass and framing techniques, and high-quality materials. We then work through the performance requirements; maintaining energy efficiency with large glass surfaces requires advanced glazing technologies, such as double or triple glazing with gas fills and low-E coatings.”
Ensuring airtightness and water resistance without bulky seals can be difficult, but it’s important to resolve these issues to ensure a minimalist aesthetic.
“Patience is the key to overcoming any design issue, there is a lot that goes on behind the curtain before we can provide systems for architectural designs and dreams. Providing personalised design options without compromising the minimalist aesthetic requires a balance between simplicity and flexibility,” says McGauley.
Oversized guillotine windows are making waves in the world of minimalist design. These vertically sliding windows operate smoothly with a counterbalance system, allowing for effortless opening and closing. “They’re ideal for maximising ventilation while maintaining a sleek, modern look,” says McGauley. The seamless operation and clean lines of guillotine windows make them a fantastic addition to any contemporary space, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality.
Oversized pivot doors are another innovation that’s capturing attention. Up to six metres high and automated, these impressive doors rotate on a central pivot point, creating a striking entrance with a minimalistic design. “Advanced engineering allows these large doors to operate smoothly and effortlessly, despite their size. They can be crafted from various finishes to minimalist materials to suit the aesthetic of any building.” Oversized pivot doors not only make a bold statement but also enhance the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, perfect for Australia’s love of open-plan living.
Automation automation automation. The integration of automated systems into minimalist windows and doors is a game-changer. Some motorised windows and doors can be controlled remotely via smartphone apps or smart home systems, offering unparalleled convenience.
“Imagine being able to close all your windows with a single tap or schedule your blinds to open at sunrise – this level of control and automation enhances comfort and ease in both homes and commercial spaces,” shares McGauley.
Large scale, seamless indoor-outdoor flow is more popular than ever. Large sliding doors and expansive windows help to merge interiors with exteriors, perfect for those who love to entertain or simply enjoy a beautiful view.
Low-E coatings are one of the most significant innovations in minimalist window and door systems. Double and triple glazing with low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings has become more sophisticated, offering exceptional thermal insulation. “These technologies help maintain indoor temperatures, reduce energy consumption, and lower utility bills,” shares McGauley. Vacuum glazing is another exciting development, providing outstanding insulation performance in a slimmer profile, perfect for minimalist designs.
Smart glass is revolutionising the way we think about windows. This innovative material can change its properties based on external conditions or user preferences. “Electrochromic glass, for instance, can switch from clear to tinted with the touch of a button, controlling the amount of light and heat entering a space, not only enhancing comfort but also improving energy efficiency by reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning.”
Enhanced security is a clear benefit of the latest minimalist minimalist window and door systems. Advanced locking mechanisms, impact-resistant glass, and integrated alarm systems provide enhanced security without compromising the sleek design. “These features offer peace of mind, knowing that your home or office is protected against intruders and extreme weather conditions.”
In the construction sector, efforts towards achieving carbon-neutral production processes and reducing environmental impact are ramping up, and the emphasis on circular economy principles is becoming front of mind.
“Sustainability is at the forefront of future developments, and we anticipate a rise in the use of eco-friendly materials such as recycled aluminum and sustainably sourced timber. Advances in material science will lead to windows and doors that are not only lightweight and durable but also have a lower environmental footprint.”
Expect to see more energy-efficient glazing options, says McGauley, such as quadruple glazing, and the continued adoption of bio-based and recyclable materials in window and door production.
“At Urbane Design Studio, we’re inspired by these sustainable practices and materials that are shaping the future of minimalist window and door systems. By embracing these eco-friendly innovations, we can create beautiful, functional spaces that are kind to our planet. We hope these insights inspire your next project to be as sustainable as it is stylish!”
