How much does a steel fence cost?
When it comes to estimating the cost of a steel fence, there are several things to consider. The most important being the perimeter measurements, the number of fencing panels you’ll require and the size of the fence.
Here's a more in-depth look:
The number and type of steel fence panels and posts required
The more panels required for your steel fence, the higher the overall fencing costs. The type of panels chosen, such as decorative or standard panels, can also affect the price.
Here’s some pricing guidance for steel fences based on current estimates:
Steel fence panels ranging from 2400 x 1200mm to 2400 x 2100mm, expect to pay between $99 - $145.
Steel support posts - $79 ranging to $105 per post depending on height.
Additional add-on products you may need to consider:
Screws - expect to pay around $0.10 per screw.
Post caps for each steel support post - expect to pay between $2.50 - $7 per cap depending on the material and size.
Base plates - expect to pay around $45 per plate.
Aluminium or timber sleepers to fill in any gaps underneath any fence panel caused by uneven ground - expect to pay around $65 per aluminium sleeper and $50 for each timber sleeper.
Panels for gating if required - expect to pay between $165 - $295 for each gating panel, depending on size.
Prices quoted are a guideline only and are subject to change.
Per metre price of the area
When you engage with a fencing contractor, they will assess your specific requirements and provide you with a quote, usually priced per metre. The per metre price will depend on the style and the size of each steel fencing panel you choose, and a fencing contractor will often include other materials required for installation in this price rather than just quoting the price for the fence panels.
A handy formula to keep in mind for how per metre pricing is calculated is: Per metre fence price = (total cost of fence materials + labour costs + additional expenses) / total length of fence in metres.
The height of your steel fence
In Australia, there are five standard fence heights: 0.9m, 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m, and 2.1m. The taller the fence, the more materials and labour are needed, resulting in a higher cost. Custom-sized fencing outside of these standard fence heights will also likely incur higher costs. For example, if your fence is higher than 2.1m, a fencing contractor may require a scaffold to install the fence correctly, which will be charged on top of materials and labour.

Soil type and land layout
If the fence installation occurs in an area with challenging soil conditions, additional labour and materials may be required for proper fence installation. Factors like soil composition, drainage, stability, frost line, erosion, and soil testing can affect the installation process and durability of the fence. Additionally, if a fence is installed on uneven ground, there may be a requirement for additional products, such as aluminium or timber sleepers.
Type of support posts or foundations required
Different supports or foundations may be necessary depending on the soil conditions and specific requirements. Types of posts or foundations that can support steel fence panels include steel posts, concrete footings, and sleeved posts.
Steel posts offer durability and strength, while concrete footings provide a solid foundation. Sleeved posts combine steel posts with PVC sleeves for added protection against corrosion. Your choice will depend on factors like installation requirements, soil conditions, and personal preferences. As a reminder steel support posts typically range from $79 to $105 per post depending on their height.
Possible removal of an existing fence or fence extension
If you have an existing or old fence that needs to be removed, you’ll need to factor this into your budget. A fencing contractor can estimate how much it will cost to remove an existing fence and how long it will take. When evaluating a price, they'll consider the type of fence that needs removing, the length and height of the fence, how accessible the fence is and any disposal fees.
Factoring in labour rates
On average, a fencing contractor may charge upwards of $50 per hour, so expect to pay at least $400 per day for labour (equivalent to an 8-hour workday). It's always worth getting several quotes from a few fencing contractors, looking at reviews for each contractor and seeing photos of their previous related work for reference. The fencing contractor you choose will likely factor their labour costs into the price per metre quote they give you.
Painting your steel fence
Painting or covering each fence panel affects the overall price of your fencing project due to increased material and labour costs. Painting each panel can provide long-term benefits such as enhanced durability, reduced maintenance, improved aesthetics, and potentially increased property value. Remember that most steel fence panels are available in various colours and designs, so additional painting or covering won’t necessarily be required.
If you want to purchase paint, 500ml-1-litre tubs suitable for steel fences typically range from $40 to $120.
Staying aware of local regulations
Each state has different rules regarding the construction of residential fences and whether a permit is required. An experienced fencing contractor should be able to inform you whether a permit is needed and the cost involved. We also recommend reviewing state fencing guidelines before starting your steel fencing project.
The requirement for a fence permit can be influenced by factors such as its height and style.
Frequently asked questions about steel fencing
How long will a steel fence last?
A steel fence can last anywhere from 20-50 years with proper care and maintenance. For maximum longevity, you’ll want to clean your fence regularly using hot soapy water with a soft brush or cloth. It’s also worth periodically inspecting your steel fence for any signs of damage, such as rust, dents or loose components, and taking action to remedy any damage you encounter. Remember that your fencing supplier will likely offer a warranty covering their fencing panels and other materials.
Should you invest in metal powder coating for your steel fence?
Investing in metal powder coating for your steel fence offers multiple benefits. It boosts durability by creating a protective barrier against corrosion, extending the fence's lifespan. It allows for customisable colours and finishes, enhancing the fence's aesthetics.
Most steel fence panels on the market come with a metal powder coating as standard. However, if the panels you have chosen do not already have a coating, you have the option to consult a fencing contractor. They can provide custom coating services or offer recommendations on reliable metal coating products. They can also guide you on how to apply the coating yourself if you prefer.
Can you paint a steel fence?
Yes, as we've noted, painting a steel fence is possible. Before painting, it's important to thoroughly clean the fence panels by removing dirt, dust, and loose paint. Additionally, try and keep on top of imperfections, such as patches of rust that you spot.
For further protection, apply a primer, which adds extra protection against corrosion. Opt for a high-quality exterior-grade paint formulated explicitly for steel surfaces when choosing your paint. Also, remember that steel fence panels are available in various colours, allowing you to select the one that best suits your preferences when making your panel choice.
