With warmer weather on the horizon, now is the perfect time to start thinking about how to make your outdoor space more functional, comfortable, and inviting. Whether you're hosting long lunches, enjoying quiet evenings under the stars, or simply looking to maximise the usability of your backyard, thoughtful design additions can make a big difference. Here are five ways to get your backyard summer-ready and create an outdoor space you’ll want to use all season long.
1. Define Your Outdoor Living Zones
Just as we divide interior spaces into zones, kitchen, dining, lounge. Outdoor spaces benefit from the same approach. Consider how you want to use your backyard and allocate areas accordingly. For example, a lounge-style seating area near the house might flow into an open lawn or garden, with a separate zone for cooking and dining. Simple landscaping features, decking levels, or outdoor rugs and furniture can help define these zones and improve both form and function.
2. Add Shade or Shelter
To extend the usability of your outdoor area, incorporate elements that provide shade and protection from the elements. Pergolas, retractable awnings, and louvre roof systems can offer coverage from harsh sunlight while still allowing for airflow. Opt for materials that complement your home’s architecture and withstand New Zealand’s variable climate. A covered space also makes outdoor entertaining more reliable, especially during those unpredictable spring and early summer months.
3. Introduce Warmth with a Fire Pit
Even on a summer evening, temperatures can drop once the sun sets. A fire pit not only creates warmth but also becomes a natural gathering point in your outdoor area. Fire pits can be chosen to suit a range of design aesthetics, from raw corten steel finishes to sleek stainless steel models.
There are two main types to consider:
Wood-burning fire pits: These offer a traditional, atmospheric experience and the familiar crackle of a real flame. They suit open spaces and can often double as cooking features when paired with a grill.
Gas fire pits: These are low-maintenance and easy to ignite, making them ideal for smaller spaces or areas closer to the home. Gas models also produce less smoke and require minimal cleanup.
When selecting an NZ fire pit, consider how it fits into your layout. A freestanding sculptural designed large fire pit can become a striking focal point, while a built-in fire feature may blend more seamlessly into paved or decked areas.
4. Invest in Comfortable, Durable Furniture
Outdoor furniture should be both practical and comfortable. Look for materials that can withstand sun, moisture, and temperature shifts, powder-coated aluminium, teak, and UV-resistant fabrics are all popular choices. Modular lounge sets, bench seating with built-in storage, and dining tables with integrated shade umbrellas are all functional additions that elevate the outdoor experience.
Final Thoughts
Getting your backyard ready for summer is about more than just mowing the lawn and dusting off the barbecue. By investing in a few well-chosen features, such as shade structures, comfortable seating, and a fire pit, you can create a space that works for both day and night, right through the warmer months. Whether you're planning a full redesign or simply looking to make a few key upgrades, now is the time to get started.
