If you’ve noticed your copper shower slowly changing colour - from gleaming salmon pink hues to rich chocolate browns and even soft greens - you’re witnessing nature’s artistry in motion.
This slow transformation is called patina, and it’s one of the most beautiful (and useful) traits of copper. Here we explain at why it happens, how it evolves, and how to care for it.
What Causes Patina on Copper?
Copper is a reactive, living metal. When exposed to the elements - think oxygen, moisture, and even salty coastal air - it begins a natural oxidation process. This starts with the formation of copper oxide (which darkens the metal) and eventually becomes copper carbonate: the soft green or blue-green layer we call patina.
This change isn’t a flaw - it’s a feature. The patina evolves in layers, creating a complex, textural finish that’s completely unique to your environment and how the shower is used. Copper doesn’t flake, chip, or rust. It simply gets better with age.
How Patina Develops Over Time
The timeline of copper’s weathering is slow, graceful, and utterly fascinating. According to the Copper Development Association, here’s a typical progression:
Of course, your local climate, humidity, and even how often you use your outdoor shower can speed up or slow down this transformation. Coastal homes may see green patina appear faster due to higher salt exposure.
Why Patina Is Actually Protective
While the patina is beautiful, it’s also functional. This outer layer acts like a natural seal, protecting the copper beneath from corrosion, mineral build-up, and weather damage. It’s one of the reasons copper is so well suited for outdoor use - particularly in high-end plumbing and architectural detailing. So its the perfect material for Sunshowers!
Caring for Your Patina
The best thing you can do? Let it be. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or scrubbing pads that could strip the patina and expose raw copper again. Instead:
Rinse occasionally with fresh water
Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild soap if needed
Embrace minor changes - they’re what make your shower truly one of a kind
If you prefer the bright, raw copper look, you can gently polish it back - but keep in mind, that natural patina will begin developing again the moment it’s exposed. So you'll need to practice regular polishing to prevent the natural process.
Embrace the Evolving Beauty
At Sunshower, we choose copper not just for its resilience, but because of how it ages. The evolving colour palette reflects your environment, your lifestyle, and your connection to the elements. Its like a story told over time, one that adds soul and character to your outdoor space - just like nature intended.
