Indoor–outdoor flow is one of the big reasons people fall in love with their homes – and also one of the trickiest things to get right when it comes to curtains and blinds for large sliding doors.
Indoor–Outdoor Flow: Choosing Curtains and Blinds for Big Sliding Doors
Big sliding doors are often the heart of an Auckland living space, opening up to decks, patios and gardens and blurring the line between inside and out. They flood rooms with light and make everyday life feel a little more like a holiday – until you’re trying to watch TV through glare, stay warm on a winter evening, or find a bit of privacy after dark.
The right window furnishings can keep that beautiful indoor–outdoor flow while quietly solving all those practical issues. In this guide, we’ll walk through how to choose curtains and blinds for large sliding doors, using the same step‑by‑step thinking our Redgraves consultants use in real Auckland homes.
Start with how you actually use the space
Before you decide “curtains vs blinds”, it helps to ask a few simple questions.
Do you use the doors every day, or mainly when you’re entertaining?
Is this a sunny, north‑facing space, or a cooler, more sheltered area?
Do neighbours overlook you, or do you have private, open views?
Is this the main living room, a secondary snug, or part of an open‑plan kitchen?
Our approach at Redgraves is to start with function, light and privacy, then match products to the way you live. It’s the same logic people type into search – think “best curtains for big sliding doors in sunny living room” or “how to stop glare on my north‑facing deck doors” – just applied in person with a tape measure in hand.
Why custom curtains work so well on sliding doors
For many homes with large sliders, custom curtains on a ceiling‑mounted track are one of the most elegant and practical options.
They can run wall‑to‑wall, so the stack tucks neatly off the glass and keeps the opening clear.
Sheer curtains soften bright light and give daytime privacy while still keeping that indoor–outdoor connection.
Layered over a blockout or dim‑out layer, they add warmth and evening privacy when you need it.
Because everything is made to measure, we can control exactly where the curtains stack, how full they are, and how they line up with your sliding door joinery. That’s hard to achieve with ready‑made options, especially over wide spans.
When blinds are a better fit
Blinds can be a great choice for certain sliding‑door setups, especially when space is tight or you prefer a more minimal look.
Roller blinds Roller blinds work well if you want a discreet solution that almost disappears when not in use. We often use them in combination with sheer curtains – the blinds come down at night for blockout or dim‑out, and roll away during the day while the sheers handle light and privacy.
Panel or vertical‑style solutions Panel‑style treatments can suit very large expanses of glass, giving you sliding sections that echo the door lines. The key is careful planning of panel width and stacking so they don’t feel busy or get in the way of how you move in and out.
In general, we’re cautious with heavy venetian‑style blinds across large sliders – they can be awkward to operate and visually fussy over big spans. Instead, we lean towards roller, sheer and layered combinations that are easy to live with day to day.
Keeping the flow: layout, stacking and hardware
Indoor–outdoor flow is as much about how things move as how they look. For sliding doors, that comes down to three big decisions:
Which side the curtains or blinds stack to
How high you mount the track or hardware
Whether you want manual or motorised operation
We usually recommend stacking off the main access route, so you’re never brushing past fabric or dodging blinds every time you step outside. Ceiling‑mounted tracks help draw the eye up and make doors feel even taller, which suits modern, minimal interiors.
Motorised curtains and blinds are increasingly popular on big sliders because they handle the weight and width effortlessly – and they integrate nicely with smart home systems. If you’ve ever typed “motorised blinds for sliding doors” or asked an AI assistant to “close the living room curtains at sunset”, you’ll know how quickly this becomes one of those “why didn’t we do this sooner?” upgrades.
Balancing views, privacy and comfort
One of the worries we hear most often is: “I don’t want to lose my view.” The good news is that with the right fabric and layering, you don’t have to choose between views and comfort.
Daytime: Sheer curtains or light‑filtering blinds soften brightness and give privacy without closing you in.
Evening: A heavier curtain or blockout blind layer gives you that cosy, enclosed feeling once the lights are on.
All year round: Thoughtful fabric and lining choices help reduce heat loss in winter and filter harsh sun in summer.
Search phrases like “insulated curtains for sliding doors”, “privacy sheers for indoor–outdoor living” and “best blinds for west‑facing sliders” all point to the same thing: people want spaces that feel good to live in, not just to look at in photos. That’s exactly where custom solutions shine.
Indoor–outdoor flow, inside and out
For some homes, it also makes sense to look beyond the glass and consider outdoor blinds to complete the picture. Products like Ziptrak® outdoor blinds can turn a deck or patio into a sheltered outdoor room, working in tandem with your interior curtains and blinds so you can use the space in more weather, more of the year.
If you’ve ever searched “outdoor blinds for deck”, “close in my pergola for winter” or “how to make my patio usable year‑round”, you’re already thinking along these lines. Our job is to help everything – inside and out – feel like one coherent, well‑designed space.
When you’re ready to talk about your doors
Every set of sliding doors is a bit different: some are wide and dramatic, some are squeezed into tight corners, some open to streets and neighbours, others to private gardens. That’s why our consultants always start with your actual doors, your actual light and the way your household really lives, rather than a one‑size‑fits‑all answer.
If a late‑night search for “curtains and blinds for big sliding doors” or an AI prompt about “improving indoor–outdoor flow” has brought you to Redgraves, consider this your nudge to take the next step. Book an in‑home consultation or visit our showroom, and we’ll work with you to create custom window furnishings that keep your sliders beautiful, practical and effortless to use – all year round.
