Madu Living offers premium handcrafted terrazzo stone bathtubs and basins, redefining the concept of luxury in modern homes. The driving force behind Madu Living, Ammon Lammi, shares with ArchiPro his remarkable transition from real estate agent to co-founder of a company specialising in organic stone bathware.
"About seven years ago, I was selling high-end properties, and it became clear that bathrooms and kitchens were the key to selling homes at a premium price,” says Ammon.
“Yet, in most of the luxury homes I was selling, you would still see cheap-looking porcelain baths and basins."
Understanding what homebuyers valued in a property led Ammon to discover a gap in the market for quality natural stone baths and basins.
Ammon's business partner, who owns a successful furniture company, spurred the idea for Madu Living after attending a home expo. “Long story short: We fell in love with the product, and became the exclusive importer for Australia," he recalls.
“We travelled overseas and redesigned their existing moulds, making them more appealing, matte-finish instead of gloss and thinner profiles. We also curved the insides of each mould to improve water flow.”
Madu Living baths are made from a composite of resin and terrazzo stone, providing a refined and organic finish – minus the hefty cost and weight issues of concrete or solid stone alternatives. While concrete and stone baths can weigh anywhere from 400 to 600 kilograms and need to be craned into a property only to be susceptible to cracking. Madu Living's baths weigh a much lighter 100 to 150 kilograms, making them easier to install without compromising durability.
"We use a special resin mixed with terrazzo stone, which has been used for centuries in Italy. It makes for a significantly lighter and more durable product," says Ammon. Another key advantage is that Madu Living keeps stock in its Australian warehouses, ensuring quicker delivery times. "We strive to always have stock available to ensure there is no six-month wait time.”
According to Ammon, an efficient logistics setup ensures customers and specifiers don’t have to endure long wait times, a common issue with many competitors.
Sustainability is a core value for Madu Living, and its eco-friendly approach goes beyond just the materials used in the bathware products to ensure the packaging is sustainable, too. With Western Australia preparing to ban foam packaging, Madu Living is ahead of the curve by moving toward fully sustainable packaging solutions.
The company’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop there. Its baths and basins have a smooth, durable finish and three protective coatings. "We can even apply a UV-protective coating for outdoor use," Ammon notes. This added layer of protection makes the baths versatile for both indoor and outdoor settings, allowing homeowners to enjoy their luxurious bath in a private garden without worrying about sun damage.
The high-quality plumbing fixtures further enhance the experience and longevity of the stone basins and baths. Ammon highlights the importance of these details: "The pop-down plug system prevents accidental water release and is easy to clean. The patented design of our wastes allows the centrepiece to be easily removed and replaced if required.”
What truly sets Madu Living apart from other bathware manufacturers and suppliers is its commitment to offering specifiers bespoke designs. Ammon emphasises that every shipment brings new models and improvements driven by feedback from owners, architects and designers. "We’re constantly refining our designs," he says. We don’t want to be a company that sticks to the same models for years; we evolve with every shipment and can create whatever the specifier has envisioned for the space."
This commitment to innovation enables Madu Living to help specifiers set trends in luxury bathroom design. Whether a designer envisions a custom shape, size, or finish, Madu Living can turn that concept into reality. Ammon’s strong relationship with the manufacturers affords the brand to offer unmatched flexibility and creativity in its product offerings. This has made Madu Living a trusted partner for designers and architects alike, helping them have a bathroom or powder room deserving of a multi-million-dollar property’s price tag.
Madu Living is clearly committed to innovation, sustainability and customer satisfaction. Whether you’re an architect, designer, or homeowner, choosing Madu Living’s lightweight stone baths and basins means investing in an opulent and organic touch to an essential part of the property.
