Minimalism. It became a buzzword after Marie Kondo appeared on televisions showing people how to organise their homes and only keep items that "spark joy". Characterised by a focus on functionality, clean lines and a limited colour palette, the style is said to contribute to simplifying our lives. So how can you create a minimalist home?
Not only do they clash with a neutral minimalist colour palette, televisions often take up space when not being used. Technology today has developed a solution for this though, in the form of pop-up and framed TVs. Let it blend as a piece of home decor until it’s time to watch your favourite show.
Minimalist homes often feature neutral colours in uncluttered spaces, but it’s important to keep the space feeling "alive". Adding plants can be a great way of achieving this, while staying true to the concept of minimalism. Dotted around the home in pots, or installed as part of a living wall, they can even double as an ever-changing art display.
Paring style choice down to neutral colours and natural materials can make for a calming environment. Complement a muted colour scheme with the use of wood, rattan, linen and other natural fibres to add textural interest.
One of the most important parts of embracing minimalism is of course decluttering – or at least making it appear as though you have. Choosing furniture that has more than one function can help achieve this. A coffee table that doubles as storage means that rather than tossing away all of your belongings, everything has somewhere to live and the area is clutter-free.
Opting for furniture with clean lines can help add to the tidy look of minimalist interior design. If you're redesigning an existing space, strip away anything that is overly complicated in form and focus on furniture with simple shapes.
As Marie Kondo says: "Imagine yourself living in a space that contains only things that spark joy. Isn't this the lifestyle you dream of?"
