When purchasing a custom-made indoor furniture piece from Kett, our promise is exceptional quality, delivered in 8-10 weeks. For some, the wait time, or ‘lead time’ seems long. Here we take you through what happens behind the scenes when you are waiting for that beautiful hand-crafted, locally made piece of furniture to arrive (and maybe, the wait won’t seem so long after all!).

Every piece of Australian furniture begins with a sketch. The lead designer of Kett, Justin Hutchinson, works with his team in their Brunswick design studio on expanding, developing and refining the design. Each stage of the design process is carefully considered, and the development stage for one design can be up to two years. This meticulous process ensures the Kett team create products with longevity, standing the test of time in both style and construction.

At Cosh Living, we display a curated range of fabric and leather options for our indoor furniture collections. These are inspired by the Australian landscape, our Mountains, Cities, Deserts and Oceans. These 72 options cover linens, wools, leathers, velvets, cottons and more. As we make to order, we also allow our clients to specify beyond these schemes, from the wide options available in our industry.  If you already have an upholstery material in mind for your home and it is in stock with the maker, we can also use this.

The made-to-order process begins as soon as an order is placed in our showroom, or online. First, the upholstery team in our Bayswater workshop requests the fabric or leather meterage from our trusted suppliers.

While this is underway, the timber sofa frame is hand-made and stained in the stain finish of your choosing. The frame itself can take several weeks as they are completely handcrafted and stained in partnership with local small businesses.

After the frame is completed, our skilled upholsterers attach the support, whether webbing or steel springs for the base. The silhouette is then built, and various soft layers of foam are added to enhance the contours and create the desired sofa shape.

When the upholstery fabric or leather arrives from our local partners, like Instyle, Mokum or Unique, it is cut to size and sewn. The fabric is then applied to the sofa’s silhouette, cushions filled with generous feather/fibre inserts, bringing us into the final stages of the upholstery process.

Paying close attention to detail, the sofa is cleaned, and goes through a quality control check, ensuring all requests are met to a high standard. Finally, the sofa is collected by the Cosh Living delivery team and driven to our Melbourne warehouse ready for delivery all over Australia.

As a business, we focus on small production runs, with furniture made-to-order just for you. Producing in this way allows emphasis on quality, custom-made pieces to last a lifetime.

In a world filled with food, fashion and entertainment just a click away, our 8-10 week lead time can feel like a long time! We choose to opt-out of the fast furniture cycle and instead return to traditional craftsmanship with quality that can be trusted.

Taking a closer look at our made-to-order process, and how it speaks to our beliefs of local collaborative Australian production, We hope to communicate how incredible it is to have an exceptional hand-crafted piece of furniture in 8-10 weeks, made just for you.
