The irreplaceable role of an electrician in your home design…

It’s clear why electricians are indispensable in home construction and design; however, their role extends far beyond wiring - electricians incorporate safety and functionality into your space while making it as comfortable as possible.

“We take so much pride in our work - when the customer walks into their house, we want them to absolutely love what we've done and make sure it exceeds their expectations,” explains Steve when discussing the process. “We prioritise getting to know the customer on a personal level and figuring out what they want out of their home and how we can help to make that happen.”

“We also always like to provide some point of difference and search outside of the traditional house with a square room and four downlights - we're always trying to break outside of those moulds.”

With a deep understanding of how important a home is to a person, Steve and his team at
Pro-Spec Electrical ensure that they deliver their work to the highest standards whilst guiding you through illumination and installations, keeping collaboration at the heart of the project.

“Some people love heaps of light; others like it a little more moody. Some people like heated towel rails and other people think they’re a waste of electricity - this is why we love getting to know our clients so we can grasp a really good idea of what they want and how we can tailor our electrical plan to suit them, and they're going to be stoked with.”

“Sometimes we can see that plans going a little bit astray because an idea might come up that can over-complicate things, and this is where we can apply our experience and help guide the client.”

Understanding that every home is unique, electricians also provide tailored solutions that cater to the homeowner's specific needs. By collaborating closely with specifiers, from architects to interior designers, they can optimise the home without compromising on the aesthetics within the space.

"Often, we'll have an Architect who is really hands-on with everything. They usually provide a lighting design themselves or through a specialist they work with. Other times, we receive plans directly from the builder or the client. When drawing out the plans, we consider the budget and the style of the house.”

"From here, we propose a design that we believe suits the house, aligns with the budget and complements the style without going overboard. Our base electrical plan includes a quote that prioritises optimising lifestyle needs - it's not just about one light and one power point."

With reliable and professional advice, Pro-Spec's personalised plans and detailed quotes allow for complete transparency throughout the project. This also creates additional space for collaboration - lighting has the power to entirely change a room, so ensuring it matches the desired aesthetic is crucial.

"As we get closer to wiring, we meet with the client to go through each room, discussing their specific requirements and preferences. It's a collaborative process, ensuring we tailor the electrical setup precisely to their tastes and needs."

“What Pro-Spec really values and puts a lot of effort into is accurate and clear electrical plans. This is so everyone knows what's happening. Sometimes, variations on a project can blow out budgets, and if people have different expectations, things can get a bit awkward. We have a clear plan and provide our customers with zero doubt so they know exactly what to expect.”

Beyond architectural lighting, electricians can also help integrate smart appliances into your home. With a rising demand for smart lighting and smart homes overall, it is vital to trust an expert to guide you through the market choices and help ensure that your home remains practical.

“Smart lighting and smart homes are getting increasingly popular, and many options are available. Back in the day, if you wanted smart lighting, it cost thousands of dollars and was out of reach for most people. We're trying to push a bit more toward the mid-market and let people know they can install smart lighting and achieve a smart home with a relatively reasonable budget.”

With a less-is-more approach, Pro-Spec Electrical prioritises functionality throughout the house, optimising only what needs to be optimised while ensuring that whatever is installed packs a punch.

“You don't have to go too far overboard. I believe the best place for automation would be the exterior lighting, media rooms and the lounge. Being able to push a button and the blinds come down, lights dim, and the TV comes on is true optimisation, and I think that’s where smart appliances should come in.”

Confiding in your electrician mitigates the stress of making sure that you're choosing the right products and that they work in tandem with each other. With extensive knowledge behind appliances, electricians can help you identify the pieces and curate a design that ensures complete home optimisation instead of over-complication.

“I would recommend if you have a mid-range house and you're trying to get into automation, look at installing some exterior lighting, do your lounge and a couple of other 'fancier' things like access control such as an automatic garage door or gate. This means you can be driving in your car and you can ask Siri to open the gate for you, or if you've driven away and you don't know if you've shut your garage door, you can just ask your phone!”

“That technology, although it sounds complicated, is not out of reach, and that's what we're trying to promote now. And you don't need to do the whole house. Automation should make your life easier, not more complicated and frustrating—less is more!”
