For Sam and Honor Petrie, who launched their architectural building company in Christchurch in 2017, looking after their clients is number one. It is the foundation on which they have built their reputation for personable, high-quality services based on integrity.
A unique point of difference for Petrie Construction Ltd is that Sam is not only a Registered Master Builder and a qualified carpenter but also holds a degree in Architectural Design. In his role as Petrie Construction’s Director and Operations Manager, Sam’s dual expertise is a true ace card.
“Sam brings expertise in both design principles and practical construction,” says Sam’s wife Honor, who also plays a vital role in managing the business and supporting best practice. “Sam’s extensive industry experience allows him to balance aesthetics and functionality in every project. His dedication to his own family influence his own caring approach to the business and providing quality craftmanship.”
The couple, who have two boys, value their community connections and believe that investing in family and people is both a privilege and a reward. Specialising in high-quality, architecturally designed projects, Petrie Construction has completed many memorable new homes and renovations. The most enjoyable part of every build for Sam and Honor is seeing the happiness in the owners’ at project’s end.
“We work hard to meet client expectations, and to have a home completed to the highest quality for a family is most satisfying,” says Sam.
Petrie Construction’s latest new build on Kotare St, Fendalton is a masterclass in beautiful, timeless brick cladding. Used to create charming, recessed windows, classic brick also enhances the architectural aesthetic and provides improved weather protection. Here, the use of brick has been further extended to the outdoor living fireplace, doubling as a pizza oven.
Another recent stellar build from Petrie Construction is a four-bedroom standalone townhouse on Proctor St in St Albans, show casing high quality finishes with engineered stone benchtops and wooden flooring. The home is positioned to capture the sun, with a perfect outdoor area for summer entertaining that is also beautifully connected to internal living and dining spaces.
Rather than pumping out a large volume of homes, Honor and Sam have deliberately chosen not to bite off more than they can chew and uphold a consistent focus on high quality.
“We take time to employ the right staff: our team share similar values and know what is expected, and the same goes for our subtrades. We know each other well. It means we are on the same page; there is a synergy in this. We ensure each sub trade has allocated time to do what they do best with the space to work their magic.
“We communicate a realistic timeframe to clients and we have clear, transparent and proactive discussions about any variations so that clients always know what to expect and there are no surprises.”
Sam and Honor recommend all prospective homeowners to ‘do your research’ and get to know your builder. “There’s a great opportunity to come meet us and other leading architects, builders and designers at ArchiPro’s Home Design Evening on 9 August at Te Pae, Christchurch, (archipro.co.nz/home-design-event). Head along and get inspired, while enjoying canapés and champagne!”
