Sixteen Pin Chair

16 Pin reframes traditional seating by taking an uncompromising approach to architectural form and presence. Serving as a guardian of the room, the piece commands space with a quiet authority, transforming seating into a deliberate design statement rather than a passive object.

Designed by Klaus Todt as part of Collection 42, 16 Pin originated from a curiosity to re-evaluate traditional techniques and discover new applications. The design achieves its distinct character through an unconventional application of Shou Sugi Ban, the traditional Japanese technique of charring timber, typically reserved for exterior cladding. After the charring, the surface is carefully brushed and sealed with oil. This ensures a smooth and waterproof finish that highlights the Macrocarpa’s grain while ensuring no carbon residue is left behind. Each individual charred Macrocarpa pin is separated by a vibrant lime green spacer. This unexpected pairing creates a striking visual contrast, enhancing the deep texture of the charred grain while giving the eye another layer to discover.

16 Pin provides a distinctive seating option for architectural interiors. Designed to sit purposefully in expansive living areas, foyers, or bedrooms, it combines functional seating with a strong sculptural presence, proving that a chair can offer a completely different perspective on how a room is anchored.
