MY Consulting Engineers Ltd is a structural engineering company based in Nelson, New Zealand.

We offer expert advice and structural design services of new buildings, upgrades, alterations, and additions both in the commercial and residential industry. We also provide seismic assessments following earthquakes as well as seismic analysis of existing structures. We are a Member of the Institution of Professional Engineers and Engineering New Zealand.

We aim to provide informative advice, quality design solutions, efficiency, integrity, and a smooth design process.

We use Teamwork in ArchiCAD as the platform to produce our structural drawings. This approach is a cloud-based Building Information Management system (BIM) and allows a high level of coordination between both the architects and the engineers, allowing the team to collaborate together to produce a Virtual Building Model, associated drawings, and documentation in a secure, real-time format. By using this approach, it allows for early identification of potential clashes and discrepancies, ultimately resulting in less risk, better project outcomes and significant time and cost savings.

What does a Structural Engineer do?
Most structural engineers work as consultants to architects or design-build contractors. It's the structural engineer's responsibility to calculate the loads (like snow, wind, and earthquake forces), fit the structure to the architecture, and decide on what structural systems to use (steel, concrete, beams, etc.).
You need a structural engineer to: Provide designs for residential and commercial buildings to ensure they meet the building code, assess the strength of buildings after an event (e.g. earthquakes), assess the safety of a structure such as a retaining wall.
