Breathing New Life into a Forgotten Space
Originally built for function over flair, the apartment featured good bones but little character. “It had beautiful light, generous height, and great proportions, but it was boring,” Nicole says. “It felt like a crime against design.”
Nicole saw opportunity in every corner, introducing a curved wall to create an additional room from the oversized entryway without compromising functionality. The curved feature now defines the apartment’s entrance and adds architectural drama. Minimal structural changes – including additional walls, French doors, and subtle reconfigurations – maximised the space while honouring the building’s Art Deco origins.
The Role of Mouldings in Shaping Atmosphere
From the start, decorative mouldings were central to Nicole’s vision. “I knew I wanted mouldings to create a sense of period elegance. They’re integral to giving that visual message,” she explains.
Nicole selected Intrim’s SK357 skirting and architraves for both straight and curved walls, and IN106 inlay mould for wainscoting. These elements not only introduced architectural rhythm but also served functional roles — framing artwork and concealing a secret bathroom door that seamlessly blends into the wall panelling.
Precision, Curves, and Craftsmanship
Art Deco’s geometric sensibility guided the detailing, from the sharp lines of the mouldings to the curvature of the walls. “I went specifically looking for Art Deco-style trim,” Nicole notes. “I didn’t want traditional rounded forms — I wanted square, geometric shapes. Once I saw the profiles on Intrim’s website, I didn’t need to talk to anyone else.”
Intrim provided profile samples and technical advice, ensuring the mouldings could be adapted for the curved wall design. “It was easy selecting the product — Intrim made the process really simple,” says Nicole.
Small Space, Big Impact
Every inch of this compact apartment was reimagined for purpose and flow. Floor-to-ceiling joinery in warm neutral tones conceals ample storage and utilities, creating a seamless architectural feel. The kitchen was reconfigured for efficiency, with integrated appliances and an appliance bar that allows multiple people to cook and move comfortably within the space.
“With an apartment renovation, people often say, ‘Do you really have to do all of that?’” Nicole reflects. “No, you don’t — but will it make the space better, more beautiful, more considered? Absolutely.”
A Modern Ode to Art Deco Design
The result is a home that feels equal parts intimate and grand — a refined balance of old-world glamour and modern functionality. “We’ve taken a one-bedroom flat in Woolloomooloo and turned it into a luxurious pied-à-terre that wouldn’t be out of place in Paris or the glamorous end of Potts Point,” says Nicole. “It’s proof that when you respect a building’s history and push design boundaries, beautiful things happen.”
