This pair of gabled Arrowtown houses shows what can be achieved using the same Central Otago schist but treated differently — one bagged and flush-pointed, the other raked, with contrasting timber tones giving each home its own identity.

The combination of Cluden mixed colour stone with Cluden naturals creates a natural warmth synonymous with the rustic alpine charm of the former gold-mining town of Arrowtown. One house has a bagged finish, where the stone has been pointed flush, while the other has been left with a raked-out joint. The stone is identical, but the finishes are quite different. The use of stone lintels above the windows is striking, giving a structural quality to the stone.

“When we had to decide on which stone for our home, I kept coming back to the” Cluden” Stone. Friends always comment on how beautiful the stone is. After more than 10 years we still love it!”
