The Balmoral Mid-Century project showcases the beauty of gentle architectural influence. Under the guidance of Tecture's Director Ben Robertson and Head of Interior Design Lauren Foy, this venture was marked not by the volume of additions, but by the careful celebration of the structure's inherent charm. Their work was deeply rooted in an appreciation for the property's history and a close collaboration with the homeowners, leading to a project that thoughtfully honours Australia's modernist tradition with sensitivity.

Tecture adopted a nuanced role that emphasised refinement over radical changes. Ben Robertson shared insight into their process, noting the team's strategic focus on enhancing the home's interior to make it not just visually appealing, but also highly functional and welcoming. This strategy enabled them to apply a detailed and comprehensive vision to specific aspects of the home, ensuring the enhancement of its natural elegance and seamless flow. The Balmoral Mid-Century, with its inherent architectural beauty and minimalist lines, benefited from a carefully designed extension by Tecture. This addition was aimed at improving natural light access and optimising living spaces without detracting from the home's original character.

The home's entrance sets the tone for the thoughtful integration of new and old, where classic Palladiana paving welcomes visitors into a space that radiates warmth and history. Original elements like the steel and timber staircase and the vintage Murano glass pendant light are complemented by Tecture's strategic additions, including an extension that enhances light and space while preserving the home's historical integrity. The living areas, too, reflect a balance between preservation and modernisation, with original furniture pieces receiving careful updates to blend seamlessly with the home's mid-century aesthetic. The design team's approach was to maintain the home's essence, respecting the elements that initially captivated the homeowners.

Addressing the home's unique architectural features, such as the distinctive wall in the dining area, Tecture demonstrated creative problem-solving by introducing an internal curved wall that not only camouflages the original wall's irregular angle but also mirrors its elegant curve. This solution not only resolved a design challenge but also added a functional and stylish dining space perfectly suited to the homeowners' needs. Collaborations with local craftsmen and designers further enriched the space, marrying functionality with aesthetic appeal in furnishings like the bespoke extendable dining table.

Through meticulous restoration and innovative design, Tecture has crafted a living space that respects its heritage while accommodating contemporary lifestyles, demonstrating that thoughtful architectural intervention can breathe new life into historic spaces.
