Bardon, Wanaka banner

This house is set in a small residential enclave on the western edge of Lake Wanaka. The site is essentially level and has views north to the mountains and east over the water’s edge. Neighbouring properties to the west sit high and look over the property.

The concept was to site the house around a series of outdoor spaces and courtyards that provided protection from various winds and to allow privacy from the overlooking neighbours. This layout allows various spaces to be used throughout the changing day, as well as opening up to the views.

A steel and glass entry, connected to a weathered steel gable form is all that is revealed to the street.  This entry form opens to a gallery that leads to a number of interior and exterior spaces. The interior spaces are defined by differing ceiling heights and finishes. Weathered steel, stone and plaster are used in the exterior palette.  Warm natural timbers, waxed steel and bandsawn detailing completes the interior. Extensive landscaping was undertaken to allow the house to be placed around the exterior areas, as though these spaces were existing and the house followed.
