In the heart of New Zealand’s majestic landscapes, where snow-capped peaks meet crystal-clear lakes, lies a sanctuary crafted for six families seeking refuge from the chaos of daily life.
The Design Brief: Crafting a Haven Amidst Nature’s Majesty
The vision for this project was clear: to build a home that harmonizes with its surroundings, where the view takes center stage and the interiors serve as a quiet backdrop. The clients sought a cosy, lodge-like ambiance, with plenty of timber and darker tones to create a tranquil atmosphere against New Zealand’s jaw-dropping vistas.

Navigating Challenges: Adapting to Budget Constraints
The project faced its share of challenges, particularly as construction costs soared during the COVID era. A significant portion of the budget was allocated to groundwork, leaving limited funds for interior design. However, through continuous adjustments and creative problem-solving, the team optimized the use of resources to deliver a space that exceeded expectations within the constraints of the budget.
Creative Solutions: Concealing Complex Angles with Style
The design of the home was not without its complexities, with numerous angles crafted to maximize the surrounding views. Concealing these angles required strategic placement of furniture and cabinetry—a creative challenge that the team embraced with ingenuity and finesse.
Forging great working relationships with builders is what distinguishes Yellowfox. We recognize the importance of teamwork in navigating a project. Hence, comprehending the project both from the builders’ viewpoint and the clients’ is crucial to our success
Key Learnings: Design Hacks for Space and Light
Amidst the challenges of a tight budget, the design team found innovative solutions to maximize space and light. One such ingenious design hack was the use of a mirror as a backsplash in the kitchen. Not only does this create the illusion of a larger space, but it also reflects light and the stunning vista into the heart of the home, enhancing the overall sense of openness and tranquility.
Inspiration Amidst Nature: Positive Clients and Breathtaking Views
Inspiration flowed from the clients themselves, whose positivity and appreciation for the beauty of their surroundings fueled the creative process. The breathtaking views served as a constant reminder of the importance of harmony between the built environment and the natural world.
Design Elements: Warmth, Ambiance, and Elegance
Wood grain for warmth, dark shades for ambiance, and brass for elegance—these were the core elements chosen to define the aesthetic of the home. Hettich hardware played a crucial role in bringing the design to life, with its dependable performance, stylish color selections, and unparalleled support from the Hettich team.
